Business Jet Center Goes Green on Ramp

It is replacing its gas-powered ramp courtesy and utility vehicles with electric models and has stepped up efforts to keep the ramp environment free of foreign object debris (FOD) with the latest ramp cleaning technology.

In the photo, Jason Pons, Manager FBO Operations, readied a GEM electric utility vehicle to pull the FOD Boss ramp sweeper. Before the new FOD sweeper was put into service, the ramp was manually canvassed daily for FOD by several employees. Pons said the new equipment not only added to a cleaner environment but also promoted ramp safety.

The courtesy electric car can hold up to five riders plus the driver and is used to transport aircraft passengers, crew members and employees to and from remote ramp areas and hangars. A rear compartment aids in transporting luggage. The electric vehicles get more than 30 miles from a full charge, which at about 15 cents per kilowatt hour, amounts to a 60-cent fill-up, or two cents a mile.
