The Egbe Hospital Revitalization Project
/Don Campion, president and head coach of Banyan Air Service at KFXE, passionately leads a hospital revitalization project in Egbe, Nigeria. Campion grew up in Nigeria, living alongside his parents who were missionaries working to start a much needed hospital in the remote village of Egbe, Nigeria. “As a business person and as a company, it is very rewarding to take the elements of team building and give back to those less fortunate,” Campion said. Please read on to hear more from Don about this amazing project touching hearts across the world.
Medical work in rural Africa provides a unique opportunity to give compassion and bring hope to the suffering that may have few or no choices for health care, surgery or maternity needs. This is an overview of an exciting hospital revitalization project underway in the small rural town of Egbe, Nigeria in West Africa. This 100 bed hospital was founded by Protestant missionaries and serves a 100 mile radius of villages and small towns. It has been in operation for 60 years and consists of 2 operating rooms, 3 wards, a maternity, a HIV-AIDS Center, an eye care center, a school of nursing and midwifery and a family practice residency program. After all these years it is time for the hospital to be remodeled, buildings updated, enhance the infrastructure, update the medical equipment and recruit additional talent to care for the steady flow of patients.
The project began in 2009 and we are working along side individuals, corporations, churches and not for profit organizations like SIM (Serving in Mission - a Protestant mission with offices around the world and their headquarters and USA office in Charlotte) http://www.simusa.org/ , Samaritan's Purse (a Christian Organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world) http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php World Medical Missions (an organization that offers physicians, surgeons, dentists and their families the opportunity to serve overseas in mission hospitals and clinics) and CBM an international Christian development organization improving the quality of life for those with disabilities. www.cbm.org/index.php.
It is our vision to revitalize every area of the Egbe Hospital compound by leveraging good business practices with the wise use of donor investments that will result in a self sustaining, well-equipped Christian hospital known for qualified staff, excellent medical care, use of technology, comprehensive training programs and best practices that include systems and operating procedures for each department ensuring accountability and efficiency.
My parents, Dr. and Mrs Campion, founded Egbe Hospital and lived there for 40 years and as a missionary child, I lived in Nigeria for 18 years. Thirty years later and now a business owner, it is my privilege as the Egbe Hospital Revitalization Project Leader to work with a talented team committed to the rebuilding, remodeling and re-equipping of Egbe Hospital.
Since the physical commencement of the project at Egbe three years ago, we have made tremendous progress which includes, a stable water supply with boreholes and a new reservoir, recruitment of construction and maintenance staff, installing reliable cell phone and internet service, 14 houses have been remodeled, a new 12,000 sq.ft.main building at the hospital is nearing completion, we have shipped 10 containers of medical and construction equipment. Even more exciting ... two construction project managers and project supervisor have moved to Egbe from the USA and over the years have assembled a great Nigerian construction staff. More than 200 short term volunteers have come from the US and Canada to help with the construction and medical projects these last 3 years.. Many prayers have been answered as we Revitalize Egbe Hospital!
Several doctors from the USA are preparing to live at Egbe which will turn the focus from infrastructure to patient care and training.
The entire Egbe community and surrounding villages are generously donating man-power to the projects as they witness the hospital coming back to life and fully aware that a new hospital will greatly benefit the town and surrounding communities.
As we work to transform this hospital into a shinning light equipped to serve this needy area, please consider becoming involved as a financial donor, helping source medical supplies and equipment, donating your skills and services, or networking with others that may have a desire to be a part of this exciting project.
Those that may wish to give tax deductible donations or "gifts in kind" can do so at SIM USA, PO BOX 7900, Charlotte, NC 28241 - 704.588.4300 with reference to Egbe Hospital Revitalization Project #NG96214 by check or on-line at: http://www.sim.org/index.php/project/96214 - For those living outside the USA, on the Egbe Hospital website you will be directed to the Canadian, British and Australian offices if you wish to become a donor.
We are in urgent need of medical staff for the following positions for those called to serve two or more years: 1) A Family Practice physician, 2) a general surgeon and 3) a hospital administrator and a 4) Head Nurse
