Hangar 10 Breaks Ground at MKC
/Construction has begun on Hangar 10, a unique aviation services complex at the Kansas City, Mo., Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC).
Breaking from the traditional approach found at most airports, the new Hangar 10 facility has a distinct design and is a cultural departure that features overnight inclusive pilot’s quarters and a well-equipped fitness center with separate locker rooms for men and women.
When completed, the 91,000 square foot complex, designed by Atlanta, Ga.-based Dye Aviation Facilities, will be situated on 10 acres at the northwest end of the airfield. An extensive reinforced ramp area will be built to accommodate fully fueled transport-sized business aircraft such as a Boeing BBJ. The master-planned complex will incorporate three hangar bays totaling 56,000 square feet. Two of the bays will be capable of handling Gulfstream 650 and Global Express sized aircraft.
The 28,000 square foot executive terminal is highlighted by several pilot overnight rooms that double as day quarters complete with a desk, entertainment center, private bath/shower and a fold-down bed. In addition, transient customers, as well as based tenants and employees, can enjoy a large, fully equipped fitness center that includes separate locker rooms fitted with showers.
The terminal will also have meeting and conference facilities, customer and pilot lounges, leased office space and an advanced flight planning area. A specialized concierge service will assist customers with meeting and conference coordination, hotel reservations, gourmet catering, on-site rental cars, limousine services, restaurant reservations and event ticketing.
“We are very pleased to be a part of the redevelopment of the Kansas City Downtown Airport,” Hangar 10 owner Jim Stowers said. “As the revitalization of the inner core of Kansas City continues, we want to present to visitors arriving via corporate aircraft an exceptional gateway to our community that will provide a favorable first impression.”
Over the past two years, the Kansas City Aviation Department has initiated more than $90 million in refurbishment and construction projects aimed at improving the airport’s runways, taxiways and infrastructure.
“The new facility will be state-of-the-art, providing a high-tech and high-touch experience for our customers,” Hangar 10 general manager Brad Chandler said. “Although the focus right now is on building a high-quality facility, we are also excited about creating a new customer-centric culture. If we make a mistake, we will own it, and every employee will be empowered to make it right for the customer.”
Chandler explained this corporate culture will be afforded to both transient and based customers alike. “It is very important to us that our based customers are never treated better on the road than they are at home,” he said.
According to Mike Roper, MKC airport manager, the Hangar 10 complex will help anchor a new general aviation facility being constructed on adjacent property. He said the GA facility will have a self-service Avgas refueling station for piston-powered aircraft. Hangar 10 will specialize in servicing turbine aircraft. It will selling only JetA fuel and will eventually add aircraft sales and management services for aircraft owners.
